Pain from Above
By Nathaniel Goldberg
Copyright 2000 Nathaniel Goldberg
A poem about the writer being touched by God.

Last night I lay in the dark
when suddenly
I smelled a scent like a
bitter sweet garden.
A golden white light
struck the palm of my right hand
forcing it against my pillow
went across my body to my left hand
stopped for an instant then
scooped me up in a bundle of energy
ropes of coral blue lightning
that lifted me till my back
arched suspended.
A terrible pain traveled through me
I concentrated on it as if it were death
itself until it dissolved.
As quickly as the light had appeared
it vanished
and I knew that for one instant
God had touched me.
